I was just wondering if you guys are open today?

It's Thanksgiving. The grocery store where I work is open all day today. The only day of the year we close is Christmas. Today, I was stuck at the service counter answering phone calls. How dumb are people? Seriously.

I answer the phone. "Hey, are you guys open today?" the idiot on the other end asks.
"No, I just thought I'd stick around and answer the phone rather than spending the holiday with my family."

Of course, I didn't say that, but I wanted to.

The next question is usually, "How long are you open?"
"Until Christmas."

And yes, I did say "Until Christmas." I couldn't resist.

The other thing that drives me nuts is when customers come in and say stupid things like, "Oh, you have to work on Thanksgiving. That's a bummer; they shouldn't make you work on Thanksgiving."

"Well, if you didn't have to come in the store to get your lottery tickets, I wouldn't have to work, would I?"

Again, didn't say it, but I was thinking it.

Go home, you morons! Find something better to do with your Thanksgiving than bothering me!

Cute blog - More and more stores are staying open on Thanksgiving. Both my Etsy stores were open but no one came by to buy anything :(

Thanksgiving is a day for staying in and being lazy, not going shopping! Grocery stores should be closed! I like your blog venting. :-)

i used to work in a record store in the late 80's. one day, a woman comes up to me and asks for an album by bach. and then...she asked me if he actually was playing on the album. and i replied something like...um...no...he's been dead longer than recordings have been around...DUH!!

Ugh-- I forgot to bring my son's eyepatch on Thanksgiving Day. (he has amblyopia and patches about 4 hours a day to strengthen his weak eye). Did I stop at the store, just because it was open? Nope-- we just decided to skip the patch that day. The only reason was that I don't think the stores should be open on THanksgiving b/c employees need time to spend with their families. If I'd have stopped, that would have been supporting the practice.

And yes, people ask some pretty dopey questions. I've done the customer service thing before too. People are so weird.

Lol, I worked retail for years, and yeah... people ask the dumbest questions. We got a lot like those. I worked 3rd shift, and people would come in at 2am and say, "How long are you open?" Um, gee, if we're still open at 2am, it's a pretty good bet we're a 24-hour store, dontcha think? Sigh.
